Families will be left more than £500 a year worse off by George Osborne's decision to raise £13 billion by increasing VAT to 20 per cent.
The Chancellor caused uproar in the Commons as he announced the sales tax hike, which currently stands at 17.5 per cent.
The Conservatives repeatedly insisted they had no plans to raise VAT in the election campaign, while the Liberal Democrats, their coalition partners, even launched a high-profile campaign against the possibility of a Tory VAT 'bombshell'.

But the Chancellor said the crisis in the public finances left behind by Labour was so severe that the move was now 'unavoidable'.
The VAT rise will come into force on January 4 next year, giving some time for retailers to prepare and leaving the crucial Christmas trading period unaffected.
