Successive interest rate rises and higher Queensland government registration charges were mostly to blame. Last year registration fees rose by 17 to 22 per cent and this came on top of the loss of the 8.3¢ a litre state fuel subsidy.
Motorists were also hit with a further 3 per cent rise in registration this year, traffic improvement fees, a 31 per cent hike in drivers' licence fee, and hefty increases in motorway and bridge tolls.
This was offset to some degree by the reduction in CTP insurance and, in most of the 78 vehicles in the latest survey, comprehensive insurance premiums.
The RACQ says using the car will only get more expensive as more vehicles take to the road, with demand pushing up the price of petrol and congestion forcing the vehicles we drive to run less efficiently.
"All these things can have an impact on the cost of motoring," Mr Spalding says.
A study into emissions and fuel consumption two years ago showed a large family sedan used up to 30 per cent more fuel on the trip home if the road was congested.
